Dear New Deal Cafe Members and Supporters,

We finally obtained the final approval yesterday for the cafe's kitchen renovation. The kitchen construction is now OVER!

Chef Karim is hiring/training the staff, ordering/preparing food for the full menu, and readying his operation. The board has been working with the music and events team to insure that the arts and music are an integral part of the new cafe experience. Two new art shows have been hung, and music is being phased in as staff become more comfortable with the details of the operation. Last night, the patio enclosure was installed which will allow the cafe to serve beer and wine on the patio. [New advertising line: "Everything tastes better outside!"]

The cafe will open to the general public on Wednesday, June 25. Chef Karim will be open for members only to get an advance taste of the menu (regular prices) on Monday, June 23, 5pm - 9pm, and Tuesday, June 24, 11am - 4pm. Members are welcome to bring family or friends to the members only hours at the cafe. The only caveat is to bring some patience for the staff as they get up to speed.

Hope to see you there!

"When Karim Kmaiha closed up his sandwich shop and bakery in Lebanon nearly 20 years ago in the midst of a civil war with hopes of finding stability and safety in the United States, he wasn't sure if he'd ever have his own business again. But in just two weeks the Rockville resident will see the rewards of his hard work as Greenbelt's New Deal Cafe reopens with Kmaiha as manager and head chef."

Stopping by the Cafe on a Sunday Evening

By Jon Gardner, with apologies to Robert Frost

Who saved the Cafe? I think I know.
It has been saved before, although;
The latest plan will surely try
To pay back all the debts we owe.

I came here to eat a ham on rye,
But Don said he needed one more guy
To close the place this Sunday night
So I started wiping the tables dry.

And in between I took a bite
Of the sandwich that I bought that night.
And wondered if Karim will keep
The menu items that seem so right.

The Cafe's comforts are dark and deep,
But I pile the recycling in a heap,
And wash the dishes before I sweep,
And wash the dishes before I sweep.
