Membership Benefits

Become a member! The New Deal Cafe is a member-supported cooperative.

As a member, you are an owner of The New Deal Cafe and enjoy the following benefits:

  1. The pride and satisfaction of being an owner of a unique, mission-driven, not-for-profit business that provides a welcoming, safe space for folks to gather and an award-winning venue for music, visual arts, film and poetry.
  2. The ability to have direct influence on the policies and goals of the cooperative, including the right to vote, and become a candidate, for the board of directors and audit committee, and the right to raise and/or vote on major issues (bylaws changes, major obligations, etc.) in special meetings or the annual membership meeting.
  3. Food & beverage discounts, including $2 off beer & wine and $1 off appetizers at monthly Member Appreciation Nights (the second Monday of each month) and discounts special events (wine and beer tastings, etc.).
  4. A 10% discount on all Cafe-branded merchandise (beer glasses, coffee mugs, T-shirts, etc.)
  5. Twenty seats in the back room set aside for members at music events* (*reservations must be made in person at Cafe, with membership card, at least 72 hours in advance. First come, first served.)
  6. Special discounted rates for renting the back room for private events.
  7. A free subscription to our monthly newsletter!
  8. The ability to make new friends and gain valuable skills by taking advantage of volunteer trainings and volunteer opportunities!

Board of Directors

The board of directors is elected from the membership to oversee operation of the cafe. The current board members are

Regular board meetings are held on the 4th Monday of the month at 6:30pm at the cafe. Members are welcome at regular board meetings.

How Can I Help?

  • Become a member! The New Deal Cafe is a member-supported cooperative.
  • Donate to the cafe to enhance your dining experience. Help fund major improvements like a new floor and nice furniture. You do not have to be a member to donate, but becoming a member gives you a voice and a vote in the operation of the cafe.
  • Volunteer — join a committee!

A Short History of the New Deal Cafe

For years, Greenbelt residents caught up on old news and greeted their neighbors in such places as the produce aisle of the Co-op grocery store and the gasoline station. These are not the ideal locations for extended philosophical debates and lively games of chess. Greenbelt was in need of a coffee house. Perhaps the idea for a cafe was spurred on by a vacant space (later filled) at Greenbelt’s Roosevelt Center, which seemed perfect for such a meeting place. Read more!
