Singing for Justice

Singing for Justice is a film about folk musician and activist Faith Petric (1915-2013).

Petric used folk music to inspire action and solidarity at civil rights marches, anti-war protests, and events supporting labor and LGBTQ+ rights. “In times of darkness, Faith showed that a well-sung song could light the way forward,” says Estelle Freedman, director of the film, who will attend the screening. Elise Bryant, DC Labor Chorus Director, will lead the post-film discussion.  The acclaimed D.C. Labor Chorus will also perform. The Labor Heritage Foundation, film sponsor, organizes the annual DC Labor FilmFest that takes place each May at the AFI Silver Theater in Silver Spring. Starting in May, 2017, the New Deal Café has also screened one of the FilmFest films.
