John Lewis – Get in the Way

On Monday, November 16, 2020, Reel and Meal presents John Lewis – Get in the Way. We highlight John Lewis during a major election month because of his championship of voting rights at a time of mass upheaval.

It is hard to match Lewis for the courage he showed in nonviolent protests and civil disobedience. Mobs assaulted him when he took part in the Freedom Rides but he never relented in his commitment to nonviolence. In 1965 he led the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, where Alabama state troopers attacked peaceful protesters with billy clubs, bullwhips, and tear gas. That event led to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act into law that prohibited racial discrimination at the polls.

SCLC President Josephine Mourning will lead the discussion following the film.

Come learn what we can do about systemic racism and state sanctioned violence today as we attempt to restore the full force of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
